If you live in the Munich area, supporting 1860 München might be a better idea than Schalke, Bremen or HSV, though. There’s something quite endearing about that club.

Fussball (Soccer) ist nichts was man simulieren kann. Ausser man simuliert sich dermaßen übertrieben, dass man Zwangsmitglied bei Bayern München wird. Als neutraler Fussballinteressierter sollte man sich Manschaften wie Schalke04 (Meister der Herzen), Werder Bremen (grün und stinkt nach Fisch) oder den Hamburger Sport Verein (HSV) einprägen um möglichst viele Sympathiepunkte bei der eingeborenen Bevölkerung zu sammeln.
Ich hätte dies alles auch in englisch schreiben können, zolle aber dem deutschen Sport meine Hochachtung indem ich mich meiner Muttersprache befleißige.

To feign interest in baseball is not difficult. Apart from complimenting individual feats (Nice throw!) you need to periodically mention things that show you are tuned into the philosophical nature of the game. Here are some examples: “That is why this is a game of inches!” “Baseball really is the thinking man’s game!” “Baseball is a simple game. You throw the ball, you hit the ball, you catch the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains.” (a quote from the best ever baseball movie, Bull Durham –yes, they make movies about baseball!)

Also, you must be able to instantly summon up an insult for the umpire when a call is made against your team (whether it is correct or not) like: What’re are you, BLIND?” or “Hey Ump! You Suck!”

Finally, you must be aware of some constant and simple truths: The New York Yankees are only good because they pay the most to their players over all other teams and the Chicago Cubs will always fail to win the World Series.

I still love soccer. Fortunately in Texas I get some cable channels for mexicans with good soccer games. Football to me is just boring, due to all the breaks when the offensive and defensive teames are interchanged. The best thing about german soccer: You can weed your veggie garden and listen on the radio, and you gert all the information (and exitement) in a nutshell. Tooooooor!

I am german and I love german soccer. I have to, I am living in Dortmund. American baseball is nice, I liked it very much, though I don´t think that visiting a game at the Giants Stadium in San Francisco -what I did - is like watching the Red Sox. But: Looking at the results and statistics at USA Today, for me, this is like reading an article about theory of relativity. I couldn´t believe that Americans make it so complicated…
Is that on purpose?
A real disadvantage of american baseball: They offer so much to eat that we had stomachache the other day. We had…Hot Dogs, pizza, ice cream and cotton candy…Don´t know ehy we felt so bad…:-)
