Eine Kleinigkeit - Kartoffeln kommen nicht aus Amerika (lt. eigener Def. wären das die USA) kommen aber aus Süd- mittelamerika. Aber in Europa wurde diese Pflanze nur im Garten als Deko gezüchtet, bis die Preussen (aus Not während des 7 jährigen Krieg) per Gesetzt den Anbau von Kartoffeln verlangten und von dort aus über ganz Europa nach USA kamen. Deshalb Kartoffel = Grundnahrungsmittel.

Interesting, many commenters failed to differentiate between what Germans actually do, which is what the original post stated, and what is proscribed by the German Language Law, which most commenters chose to comment on instead.

That reminds me of an old German saying: “It cannot be, what is not allowed.”

As a matter of fact, many Germans do write “Du”, “Sie” and “ich”.
Regardless of what is allowed by the new German Language Law.

Yes, in Germany there is a federal law which proscribes the correct spelling and capitalisation of German words.
Occasionally this law is updated and simplified, which paradoxically leads to more confusion, as evidenced by the above discussions.

Do any of you Besserwisser happen to know if writing “Ich” is verboten by the new Deutsche Rechtschreibung?

Apparently, it is considered proper to capitalize you in order to show respect for others, but it is considered improper to show respect for one’s self in the same way.

Every time I have to wait in a “line” in Germany, I start having doubts about the respect of Germans for others. There it becomes clear who literally comes first, and that the respectful “Sie” is really just superficial.

Eben nicht. ‘Sie’ als Anrede ist nach wie vor groß zu schreiben, genauso, wie Gruß und Grüße nach wie vor mit ß zu schreiben sind und hinter beide kein Komma gehört.

sondern:
Viele Grüße
Anna Meier

oder auch:
Es grüßt Sie
Anna Meier
